I work at the precise point where working conditions meet human biology. Twenty years establishing how an exposure with hazard becomes an effect — and now, how a condition becomes a capacity.

The path

Twenty years tracing causal chains.

I spent my scientific career establishing how an exposure becomes an effect: by which mechanism, at what dose, with what uncertainty. In regulatory toxicology that discipline has a name — Adverse Outcome Pathways. You learn to separate what is demonstrated, what is plausible, and what is only a story.

When I moved into psychosocial risk, I found the same questions — and often, none of that discipline. That gap is the reason this company exists.

  • A correlation is not a link. Every arrow is defended separately: biological plausibility, temporal coherence, dose–response, reproducibility. An arrow you cannot defend is removed, even when it made the story prettier.
  • Uncertainty is declared. “this point is weak” does not weaken the work. It is what makes it usable.
  • The level of organisation matters. A molecular effect is not a cellular effect, which is not an effect on the organism. Confusing the levels is the most common error in health communication.

Two domains, one through-line

Gut microbiota and regulatory toxicology.

They look unrelated. They are joined by nuclear receptor biology — the PPAR family runs through both halves of my published record.

Domain one

Host–microbiota molecular crosstalk

How commensal bacteria and their metabolites speak to the human intestinal epithelium: butyrate and short-chain fatty acid signalling, functional metagenomics, high-throughput reporter screening of NF-κB, AP-1 and PPARγ, and the muropeptide transporter published in PNAS in 2023.

Domain two

Regulatory toxicology and alternatives to animal testing

Adverse Outcome Pathway development and best practice, the PPARα-activation and reproductive toxicity pathway, endocrine disruptor screening methodology, and non-animal safety assessment case studies.

The inversion

Why do we only have this tool for damage?

We know how to map, with precision, how a system goes from a trigger to a harm. We have nothing equivalent for mapping how it climbs back. Almost all of the self-improvement literature works by general assertion — do this, you will feel better — without ever specifying by what mechanism, at what level of organisation, with what degree of confidence.

The Empowerment Outcome Pathway™ is that inversion: the same causal logic and the same traceability, applied to recovery rather than to damage. In practice it produces three things — an explicit map of what triggers what in your system, the leverage points inside that chain, and a declared confidence level for every recommendation.

This is the work I am building now: linking adverse outcome pathways and the microbiome to empowered pathways.
